Hardware Requirements for RAPID Software

INTRODUCTION
Three platform components are typically used in RAPID Software deployments: workstations, portable PCs, and servers:
- Workstation – Basic PC to be used by any Doctor or any of the staff members. It is typically fixed in one place within the practice and it must run a Windows Operating System. In most cases, hardware that the practice already owns can be used as a workstation.
- Portable PC – either a Tablet PC or Notebook
a. |
Tablet PC – Mobile PC that can be used in the same way as a workstation except that it is extremely portable and can be carried easily from room to room. A Tablet PC typically includes a stylus (digital pen) that enables users to write on the screen. It saves money by eliminating the need to purchase a separate computer for each room in the practice. | |
| b. | Notebook – similar to tablet PC in functionality but does not support a stylus (digital pen). We recommend a Doctor use a tablet PC instead. |
- Server – this is typically a PC that is beefed-up with more processing power and more memory. If a practice already owns computers with decent specs, it is possible to use one of the existing units as the server.
The number and type of computers needed will depend on the size of your practice and the number of people that will be using the software.

Tablet PC
Why do most Doctors use tablet computers, and for what?
Tablet computers are small, lightweight, portable and very easy to use, since they employ an interactive graphic display. In the ACOM Health applications they are used primarily for entering daily notes and inking on custom documents and forms.
How much should I budget?
Recommended new solutions are approx $1,100.
Can I buy used equipment?
Yes, we encourage you to do so if you will use tablet PCs for your kiosk. Used equipment is a great alternative and you can often find very serviceable units for approximately $550. eBay has proven to be a great place to shop for used/refurbished tablets.

What is an alternative to a tablet for the Doctor?
Some Doctors prefer a traditional computer workstation with screen, mouse and keyboard in each exam room. Doctors might be tempted to use a Notebook or Laptop but the inking capabilities are lost with these options so we recommend tablet PCs instead.
RAPID Software Server
What is the purpose of a RAPID Software Server?
The server is a computer dedicated to running a centralized version of the RAPID software and database. The other computer equipment in the practice accesses the Server over a network. It is good business practice to back-up the RAPID software and database daily. Back-ups should be stored offsite to ensure business continuity in the event of a disaster.
What is the difference between a workstation and a server?
Servers generally have larger hard drive capacity, more memory and a faster processor.
How much should I budget?
A typical practice should anticipate spending $750. Large practices with multiple Doctors and locations should expect to spend 50% more.
What brand do you recommend?
Dell, for reasons of cost, reliability, configurability and functionality.

Can I use a smaller Server if my practice is very small?
RAPID Documentation only clients without the RAPID Practice Management software (i.e. No Scheduling, Billing, Collections, or Reporting) may use a Workstation rather than a dedicated Server. Click here for an example of this configuration.
Patient Kiosk Options
Why should I use a tablet computer for the Patient Kiosk?
Using tablets for the kiosk enables you to obtain digital signatures as well as to have patients fill out and sign intake and other electronic forms via the inking feature.

Yes, a notebook or desktop PC can be used, but you lose the inking capabilities.
What are the minimum system requirements?
The tablet system requirements are listed in the Tablet PC section. The workstation system requirements are listed in the Workstation section.

Help - Installation, Service & Warranty
Can you help me when buying equipment?
The Turnkey Implementation service provided by ACOM Health for new customers includes an assigned ACOM Health software installation expert. The software installation expert will introduce you to reliable hardware vendors who will guide you through a diagnosis of existing practice equipment and assist with new equipment purchases.
Can you help with Installation of equipment?
The hardware vendors we introduce to you as part of the Turnkey Implementation Service for new customers will offer onsite installation services.
Should I buy an annual service contract for my equipment? ? Annual service contracts for equipment are very important. You should treat them as insurance policies that protect your practice. You hope you do not have to call for service but when you do, you want immediate help so as to minimize the negative impact on your practice.
Should I buy an extended warranty for my equipment? An extended warranty is a great idea, especially on new tablets. Extended warranties can cover accidental damage, not just manufacturer defects.
