In late 2012, CMS ruled if a provider is not successfully participating in PQRS by the 2013 reporting period (Jan.1 – Dec. 31, 2013), their reimbursement will be decreased by 1.5% in 2015 and by 2% in 2016 and beyond.

Chiropractors should strive to participate in PQRS in 2013 to earn the incentive payment and avoid the penalty.

PQRS is a Medicare Incentive program providing money every year to Medicare Part B physicians, such as Chiropractors, who may report and submit clinical data on their Medicare Part B patients.

On Wednesday, January 2, 2013, President Obama signed into law the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012.  This new law prevents a scheduled payment cut for physicians and other practitioners who treat Medicare patients from taking effect on January 1, 2013.  The new law provides for a zero percent update for such services through December 31, 2013.

As with most people, I was a little skeptical, uninformed and a lazy about the healthcare changes. After speaking several times with ACOM reps I decided to take the plunge late December 2011. The tax benefits alone were enough to convince me to sign up. I knew that the deadline was quickly approaching when we would be required to have EHR or we would be faced with a penalty, Call me wiser but turning 50 this year I have learned not to wait to the last minute. Projects are always harder, more mistakes are made and usually cost more when deadlines are approaching.

ACOM was extremely courteous, forgiving and encouraging from their project manager to their tech support. The step by step video and weekly schedule made reaching our 90 days before attestation very attainable. Understand that our office only consists of myself, my husband serving as office manager and front desk, another female for insurance, personal injury and medicare. We brought on her 16 year old daughter just for the summer for data entry. She became our biggest asset by assisting our ‘over 65′ crowd with the kiosk. No grandparent would ever say no to their grandchild. I bonused my staff when the $18,000.00 check arrived.

Now to the best part. Patients have been excited that we are staying up to date. Chamber of Commerce members see us as more credible. Communication with insurance companies and other healthcare agencies are convenient and professional. In only six months we increased out total number of patient visits and accounts receivable by 25%. Notes are complete and compliant. And this is only the beginning as the opportunity to attest continues for the next 2 years. I think the advertisement should read: ACOM $, Hardware $, Seminars $, Patient confidence, attestation check, trip to Australia with Neuromechanical… Priceless!
