1. Make sure you have enrollment records in the appropriate systems.

 

• All EPs must have a National Provider Identifier (NPI) in order to participate in the Medicare and Medicaid EHR Incentive Programs.
  Providers will need an active user account in the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES) in order to obtain an NPI
  
  Hint: You will need an account set up with NPPES in order to Register for the incentive program (Step 2) and verify your PECOS enrollment anyway.
  
  
• All Medicare EPs must have an enrollment record in PECOS (Provider Enrollment, Chain and Ownership System) to participate in the EHR Incentive Programs. To verify your enrollment, follow these instructions from CMS.

2. Register your application via the EHR Incentive Program Website

Don’t delay!  These first two steps can be done now, regardless of whether or not you have installed, or even purchased, a certified EHR product.

3. Adopt, Utilize, and Demonstrate Meaningful Use of a certified EHR.

 

4. Attest to Meaningful Use for calendar year 2011

 

You may complete attestation only after meeting Meaningful Use for 90 consecutive days in 2011.  There is no monetary penalty for completing attestation prior to achieving the maximum Medicare allowed charges of $24,000, so we recommend you attest as soon as your 90 consecutive days has been met.  February 29, 2012 is the last day you may register for the program and attest to Meaningful Use in order to receive an incentive payment for 2011.
